You can't go wrong with a Mapplethorpe on your shelf, this is my 3rd book on him and his collections are just so interesting to me. I tried to emulate him in undergrad with a few projects my professor handed to me. In hindsight, I think my professor got me into his work because she saw me struggle with my sexual identity AND she wanted me to get laid, finally.

A very good book

I am a type of person who isn't organized. I always procrastinate with things and I very seldom make a plan. This book really made sense! I highly recommend it specially if you are ready to make some positive changes in your life to be successful not just as an entrepreneurs but life in general. The way the book was written isn't so serious. I hate reading but I enjoyed it. I am half tempted to give an spoiler alert but I would like you to experience the awe of reading this book on how easy it is to be successful if you are just willing to practice the 9 habits he stated.

I got this for free in exchange of an honest review but I must say I would definitely buy it by heart.

habits can help in every area of your life

RIght away, the format of this book reminded me of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, which I really enjoy. While I love that this book has habits to help entrepreneurs become successful, I think most tips and habits given are things that can improve anyone's life. You can approach these habits, and use them to improve all different qualities of your life.

The structure of this book is to the point. I actually love it when books can go on and on about something and go off on tangents, but then I have a hard time remembering what the whole point of a story was. There is not much extra rambling, and everything is either divided into neat lists or bullet points. The straightforward nature of the book helps readers decide to just start doing what they need to. It keeps the book fairly simple, and quick to read through. I think if you're trying to become a successful entrepreneur at this time, you aren't going to have a lot of time to dedicate to reading, which is why the simple format is great.

I purchased this book when it was in its promotional stage, and free to read on the kindle, but these are my honest opinions either way. It's really helped me with getting on the right track with things.

I honestly loved reading this book. At first, I didn't really have high expectations for it. I thought it was going to have the same old stuff that most similar books consist of. This book was really helpful and the author did an excellent job at explains the topics. Being a small business owner, I was intrigued by the title of this book. I'm always looking for ways to make my business more successful. I'm not as organized as I should be and I often procrastinate, so I could definitely stand to pickup some habits of successful people. Who couldn't? Some of the topics discussed in this books are what you'd expect, but the author explained them very thoroughly and made them easily relatable. I really enjoyed this book and I definitely recommend it.

At 36, Rapp, an anthropologist at the New School for Social Research, had amnio for her first, wanted, pregnancy. When the results showed Down's syndrome, she chose abortion, with much grief. Her experience led to 15 years of research on how women of many social, economic and religious backgrounds experience genetic testing and how they interpret the information this new medical technology provides. The result is a thoughtful, if concentrated, analysis that is rich with the voices of genetic counselors, lab technicians and geneticists; pregnant women who chose to be tested as well as those who refused; those who got "bad" results; and parents of children with disabilities. In addition to tracing how genetic counselors' focus on individual choice can mask social context, Rapp also reveals how women, with or without their partners, negotiate the important decision whether or not to undergo the test. One chapter dissects the miscommunications that occur when technical language is translated into the vernacular. Another chapter lays bare how expectant parents think about fetal disabilityAand resonates with one concerning parents of disabled children. Rapp concludes that prenatal testing puts women in the role of "moral philosophers," learning to think about statistical risk analysis in relation to the "natural" process of pregnancy. Readers unintimidated by academic writing will find this study a valuable exploration of the moral and personal decisions involved in bringing a pregnancy to term. (Sept.)

Rapp, a feminist medical anthropologist who chose to terminate a pregnancy after learning that the fetus had Down syndrome, examines the social impact and cultural meaning of the prenatal tests currently available, having interviewed women waiting for test results, deciding whether to continue a pregnancy, or who refused to be tested. By observing genetic counselors at work and talking to families raising children with disabilities, she discovers the practical problems connected with testing and the different responses to pregnancy, family life, and disability in diverse ethnic groups and social classes. Her analysis of the intersection of reproductive and disability rights and their links to feminist and power issues is interesting. This jargon-filled and heavily theoretical work is not for women making decisions about testing, though; Lachlan de Crespigny's Which Tests for My Unborn Baby?: Ultrasound and Other Prenatal Tests (Oxford Univ., 1996) is a good choice for them. She has interviewed women of many different racial, cultural, religious, educational, and financial backgrounds, whom, throughout her informative book, she presents as thinking and caring persons. How does a woman decide to have an amniocentesis? Rapp asks. She shows that complex, diverse, and contradictory personal, spousal, and social pressures arise and affect the pregnant woman. For example, what, if anything, does the decision to have the test imply that a woman will do when the results become available? Rapp also explores the role of the genetic counselor: how much of the relevant scientific information does this person actually understand and put in context so that a patient can comprehend it? This volume begins a new series, the Anthropology of Everyday Life. May successive entries be as good as Rapp's William Beatty

Ethnographic method, ethno(graphic) reality

How does one, as an anthropologist, write about amniocentesis? Rapp's work redefines the scope of anthropological inquiry helping us look at U.S. culture as an acceptable site of investigation. Focusing on both the "medical establishment" and the "clients" it serves, the book leads us into alternate worlds of creating/inventing medical technology, and delivering medical technology. It is not as simple as putting women through a standardized process; their are questions of individual need, race, spirituality, class, profession, family support, and many other factors that affect the process of amniocentesis and the value of the procedure to the women who receive or refuse the technology. Beautifully written, Rapp follows many threads, both narrative and scientific, to reveal a picture that is not quite so neat.

Interesting but inconclusive

I read Rapp's Testing Women, Testing the Fetus for an anthropology/gender studies class, and as an examination of the way different ethnic groups in NYC approach amniocentesis and prenatal testing as a whole, it might be very interesting.
However, that is not what the book is about. The book is supposed to be about the impact that amniocentesis has on women's lives as they are faced with the decision not only to have the test, but what to do with the information they recieve. But Rapp was so intent on characterizing each of her interview subjects by race, occupation (hence class) and gender, that she ultimately separated and categorized her subjects in ways that left the reader hanging. She did not make any definite conclusions about amniocentesis, only that women make decisions about amnio based on values they had before they even got pregnant, possibly due to ethnicity.
If I were pregnant this book wouldn't help me at all in making a decision. But the chapters on how the tests are analyzed are quite interesting, and the chapters on disability and the way we as a society deals with disabled children in an age when it's easy for them never to be born changed the way I think about disability, and for that reason alone I think it should be read.

excelent primer on STM/AFM design fundamentals

Smith & Chetwynd's book covers many of the fundamental design considerations for ultraprecision devices. This is done from a physiscist's perspective starting with a discussion of the basis for simple beam ananlysis. It proceeds through optimal constraint and flexure design, along with actuator and detector selection. Simplified design examples are included. Finally, a selection of construction materials along with their physical properties are presented, along with a discussion of optimization on that basis.

Harald Blue Tooth strikes again!

In recent years, it has become clear that there are several discrepancies between biblical and extra-biblical sources on invasion and deportation in Palestine in the 1st millennium BCE. Such discrepancy confirms that the theme of exile in the Hebrew Bible should not be viewed as an echo of a single traumatic historical event, but rather as a literary motif that is repeatedly reworked by biblical authors.

Myths of Exile challenges the traditional understanding of 'the Exile' as a monolithic historical reality and instead provides a critical and comparative assessment of motifs of estrangement and belonging in the Hebrew Bible and related literature. Using selected texts as case studies, this book demonstrates how tales of exile and return can be described as a common formative narrative in the literature of the ancient Near East, a narrative that has been interpreted and used in various ways depending on the needs and cultural contexts of the interpreting community. Myths of Exile is a critical study which forms the basis for a fresh understanding of these exile myths as identity-building literary phenomena.

Rob Barrett worked on a Sofja-Kovalevskaja research project on early Jewish monotheisms from 2009 to 2012, is author of Disloyalty and Destruction: Religion and Politics in Deuteoronomy and the Modern World, and is now Director of Forums and Scholarship at The Colossian Forum.

Dominic S. Irudayaraj holds graduate degrees in Biblical Studies and Computers. He taught at Herat University, Afghanistan and at Andhra Loyola College, India. He is currently a doctoral student at Jesuit School of Theology of SCU, CA.

I love this book. Plain and simple: It's the absolute best retelling of the Arthurian legend I've ever read. Over the years, I've given copies to everyone close to me. I haven't reread it in years, but I must still talk about it, because when I was in Ireland and my husband commented to my 8-year-old daughter (who hasn't read it...yet!) that there are no snakes in Ireland, she piped up that the snakes that were supposedly driven out of Ireland by Saint Patrick were actually the Druid priests, whose wrists were encircled with snake tattoos. And that it's just a natural phenomenon that there are no native Irish snakes. And thus begins another generation of Mists of Avalon believers!

A Novel Take On A Classic Tale - Superb!!

Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon" is one of my favorite versions of the Arthurian legend. I first read the novel in the early 1990s, right after its publication. I reread it recently and was surprised at how much I enjoyed this extraordinary novel the second time around. I turned the pages more slowly and took more time to savor Ms. Bradley's excellent narrative and fresh version of the legendary saga of the rise and fall of Camelot. Her take on the classic characters gives them new depth and dimension. She tells her tale from a feminine perspective, and while the King and knights of Camelot dwell on war, battles and keeping their golden city and realm safe, along with focusing on chivalric honor, the women have different priorities and concerns.

The tale is told from the points of view of the much maligned Morgaine, (Morgana Le Fey), Priestess of Avalon and Gwenhwyfar, (Gwynivere), Christian princess and future queen of Camelot. Although most of the events of the traditional Arthurian legend are presented here, it is extremely interesting how the tale, told by men, changes when viewed through the eyes and experiences of a woman. This is also the important story of the political and religious conflict between the new Christianity and the "old ways" of goddess worship. Believers of each religion seek to control the throne, but ultimately Christianity ascends to be the organized religion of the land. Since Morgaine is a Druid High Priestess, it would explain why she received such a bad rap in Christian civilization. The reader also views other famous female characters from a different vantage point, including Igraine, Morgaine's and Arthur's mother,
Ms. Bradley follows Morgaine from childhood to Priestess in her home on the Isle of Avalon, the center of Druidism and goddess worship since the Roman occupation forced the religion underground, where it remained long after the Roman departure. Mists surround this mystical isle, protecting it and its inhabitants from all who do not have the psychic powers to penetrate the barrier. Morgaine has dedicated her life to preserving her ancient religion and tries to defend it against the growing numbers of her countrymen and the Camelot royalty who exchange the old ways for Christianity. She is also a very powerful person and struggles against the stereotypes which expect her to adhere to more traditional "feminine," (dependent), behavior and roles.
Bradley also follows the lovely Gwenhwyfar from the innocence of her girlhood to her rise as King Arthur's Christian Queen. She deeply fears Druid magic and her terror causes her to miscarry a long awaited baby. King Arthur's acquiescence to his wife's pleas to turn his back on the old ways and adopt Christianity is the beginning of the cataclysmic fall of his reign.
This is a most unique novel and Ms. Bradley's innovative fantasy version of Camelot, Britain during the Dark Ages, and the profound changes which took place in the land and among the people during this period had me riveted until I completed the last page. If you are open to a different take on a classic tale, then I highly recommend this wonderful novel.

A man's point of view

As I sense many of those who posted a review are women, I felt compelled to offer my thoughts.
A little preface: I read this book when I was in my early 30's. I am a college-educated professional, and a married heterosexual. I generally read non-fiction: political and military history and mountaineering literature. This book came up in a discussion with my wife, a published writer, who has read it several times and claimed it was one of her all-time favorites. As this is not slight praise from a woman who thinks Shakespeare was a lighweight compared to John Dunne, and actually argue the point!
So I picked up this book and read the first page. Quite a mistake. Three days later I finished this is not so small work having spent nearly every available non-working moment enthralled in this modern masterpiece. Simply put, it is very well written. It is a great story and it is well told. There is romance, fantasy, religion, war, politics, intrigue, and other elements to keep your attention.
I pity those who are so heavily invested in the "accuracy" of the Arthurian legend as to miss the beauty of this book. Doubly so for those who are too religiously dogmatic.

I had forgotten my love for reading after going through so many books that didn't hold my attention. The Mists of Avalon reminded me of my love for a good book and got me hooked on Marion Zimmer Bradley. This book is a perfect blend of romance, action, magic and just plain creativity that binds you to the story and leaves you begging for more. This book tells the Arthurian legend through the eyes of the women around King Arthur's life. It tells the story of the strength of Morgain (his sister), Igraine (his mother) and Guenivere (his wife). It wonderfully portrays the bravery of these women in such a brutal time, without taking away the romance and insecurity's women feel. Beautiful book. Combat Conditioning is a system of bodyweight exercises comprised of the three most important exercises for developing the entire body: Hindu squats, Hindu pushups and bridging. When Matt Furey, the author of Combat Conditioning refers to the body, though, he does so in a different manner than most:

"I am not simply referring to the muscles when I talk about the body," says Furey. "I am also talking about the lungs, the heart, the kidneys, the spine and all the internal organs and glands."

When you exercise, think of training everything from the inside out. This means that deep and concentrated breathing plays a major role. Hindu squats lay the foundation for strength and endurance. They build lung power, as well as the thighs, lower back, calves, chest, shoulders and arms. The deep breathing that you do with this exercise, all by itself, will expand the chest and make it larger and more prominent. Additionally, Hindu squats develop balance and coordination.Hindu pushups are the second component of the Combat Conditioning program.

As great and important as Hindu squats and Hindu pushups are, however, the KING of all Combat Conditioning exercises is the back bridge. It exercises the entire body from head to toe. Many people with neck and back pain feel like new after less than a month of training in the Combat Conditioning program. Furey's entire Combat Conditioning program can be done without equipment of any kind. And it can be done virtually anywhere - making gyms, health spas and weight training obsolete. A fantastic book for anyone who is seeking the ultimate in free hand exercise routines.

Unfortunately, I was sent the black and white photo copy of COMBAT CONDITIONING: Functional exercises for fitness and combat sports by Matt Furey rather then the CARTOON EDITION; nevertheless, this 136 page book has all the free hand exercises that are probably also shown in the CARTOON EDITION. The author is well known in the fitness community and his book explains in detail the various exercises that will get you into great physical shape.

He begins with emphasizing what he calls "The Royal Court." These are the most essential exercises for building the entire body. They include the Hindu Squats, Hindu Pushups and bridging. These are very rugged exercises and unless you are into good physical shape already, you should go easy into the "Royal Court" routine. This text also explores numerous other great exercises such as the wall walk, one leg squats, reverse push ups, V-ups, table making, Hindu Jumping squats, Lunges, finger tip push ups, Crab walking, Bear crawling, mountain climbers, side benders, forward Push exercise and numerous other great exercises.

The wonderful thing about this book is that it focuses on free hand exercises to build strength, power and endurance. Even though it is true that you can get a good workout in only 15 minutes; however, if you are seeking the ultimate in combat fitness you will have to follow the more challenging routines shown in this book. There is no question that doing these exercises anyone can get into great shape, whether or not you are into any of the combat sports.

Good exercises but I expected a more substantial book

I will say that the book set out what the author intended. The exercises seem challenging and accomplish the goal of a tough workout without any fancy equipment, etc. However I have to agree about complaints on price. For a relatively thin book, without any accompanying media (for example a DVD showing the author doing the exercises/routines), without color photos and glossy paper the price was a little high (although cheaper than a gym membership, etc.) I agree with the reviewer who suggested Mr. Furey put out a more polished edition and I'd add include a DVD so we can see someone working the entire exercise not just pictures of several points in the exercise.

Flawed, but unique and helpful.

Well... this book is a mixed bag. Its style is fairly amateurish and it makes a lot of over-the-top claims about how superior its methods are to every other form of strength training, familiar to anyone who's read through the marketing for as-seen-on-TV fitness programs. I would also tend to disregard any of the long-term training plans (1000 repetitions of any exercise is clearly not a good use of your time, and is certainly not the best way to gain strength).

However, for those who can read with a cynical eye and ignore this nonsense, there is a LOT of valuable content here. It is true that bodyweight exercise can be excellent for developing functional strength, and that many simple bodyweight exercises train muscles that are often neglected by weight training programs (though this argues more for their use in conjunction with weight training than as a replacement). And the list of exercises in this book is very detailed, clearly written and pictured, and includes a lot of esoteric but highly effective exercises that most people, even fitness-aware people, will not know. And these exercises can mostly be done anywhere without equipment, which makes them very useful for those who travel a lot or cannot always make it to a gym.

If you are capable of designing your own workouts, are already interested in bodyweight exercise, and are willing to do more research to find the best way to integrate these movements, this book can help you on your way and offers things many other books on strength training do not. However, if you are looking for a complete fitness program written by a professional with a scientific and reasoned approach, you may want to start elsewhere, as much of the general advice in this book is misleading, and it is much more useful for the descriptions of specific exercises.
