Gold Mine of a Play

I've had my 4th graders perform this play and it's an absolute gem. The songs are fun, well written, and easy to adapt to any size class. There's plenty of opportunity for participation for everyone and props and costumes are easy to find/create. Every 4th grade class should do it!

Outdated social messages with terrible music.

I wish I could give this play no stars. My fourth grader hates this and so do I. The music is terrible and grating, but gets stuck in your head. The slap stick approach with the anti-intellectual friend who is full of fall tales and mis-information tiresome. But overall, what is worse, is that is makes a mockery of the real suffering many faced to be desperate enough to understaake such risks and the exploitation of not just of those desperate people, but of natural resources. There is exactly one sentence about the native americans being treated badly, that seems inserted lile an an afterthought. This is a capitalist fantasy. In 2016, this seems outdated and tone deaf to social justice and environmental stewardship. This is the epitopme of white privledge, with jaunty tunes.

About the Author

During many years of seagoing in the British Royal Navy, Peter Bruce encountered extraordinarily rough winter weather in the mid-Atlantic, off Nova Scotia and Cape Town, and in typhoons off Japan and Baja California.

Much of his time is still spent at sea, racing, cruising, or researching his pilotage books. He has achieved a string of victories in his own yachts, and though these successes have occurred in all weather conditions, the very stormy races have brought his most remarkable results. He has twice been on Britain's winning Admiral's Cup team, and has taken part with distinction in most of the Fastnet races since 1961, finishing the infamous Fastnet of 1979 in the top British boat.

Son of the legendary ocean racer Erroll Bruce and longtime associate of Adlard Coles himself, Peter Bruce is uniquely qualified to carry Adlard Coles' Heavy Weather Sailing into the twenty-first century.

Essential book for those who venture offshore

I would give this book five stars except that it is a little out of date and not the easiest to read. Despite this, there is no question that the material within is critically important for any sailor who ventures offshore and worth reading. I feel this topic has not been adequately explored in the printed media. There are only three good books on the subject and this book leads the pack. There is still a lot of research to be done in area of heavy weather sailing. Coles does a good job explaining what to do in various situations he faced. This book gives you a chance to put yourself in his shoes. This book is well worth the price. It is cheap insurance considering that what you learn could save your life. Serious yachtsman read this book.

No-one who takes responsibility for others at sea should be without the life-saving knowledge in this important book. It is a 'distance-learning masterclass'of wild-water seamanship, bang up-to-date, and filled with hard-won experience of what works and what doesn't when the chips are down.
I would not want to be at sea in a rising gale without the 'know-how' I've learned from 'Heavy Weather Sailing'. I echo Pete Goss's endorsement - "If you buy no other book for your voyage, buy this one."

Whimsy in science?

Lyall Watson is a renaissance man, and his vast and varied experiences, readings
and interests are easily on display in this and all his other books. Watson has an eye for whimsical and unusual events, for beautiful images whether natural
or manufactured, and a keen intution for the magic in the ordinary image, thought, and objects.

This book specifically addresses all those strange and unexplained events which our orthodox scientists (isn't that an oxymoron) reject as unproven,
untested, and unscientific. Watson who holds a PhD in some branch of the natural sciences sees the inifinite humor, compassion, and joy inherent in being
alive on this earth, and the strange inhabitants of it, whether it be Komodo dragons, human beings, or rivers. In his stories and anecdotes inanimate objects
come to life, water can be happy or sad, mammals can re-grow severed limbs, and teh existance of shells (with their forms often representing mathematical perfection)
can have hidden lives....

If for no other reason than to have whimsical, unusual, and interesting trivia to talk about at a dry and dull dinner table, this book is to be read and marvelled at...

Read it for the Cannibal article

I read and enjoyed this book years ago, and copied a chapter I have reread a number of times and shared with friends. In the chapter called The Essence of Balance, Watson describes a culture of cannibals living in Indonesian New Guinea. These Papuan Asmat people have (had, presumably) a system of headhunting that at first glance is repellent: eating your dead enemy's brains? But in delicate detail, one comes to potentially understand this system as infinitely more civilized (to start with, by resolving tribal tensions with a single death) than our supposedly superior ways of bombing, maiming, and starving hundreds or millions. This essay alone is worth the price of the book.

Flat-out Amazing.

Not only do you feel your brain cells stretch with reading this book, you actually come out of it feeling smarter. This is not something that can be said of most books! Watson does an amazing job of drawing seemingly unconnected threads together and showing us how they fit--from a marine operculum's relationship to an extinct species of Man on the Skeleton Coast, to the opening sentence of one of the most amazing and ultimately uplifting stories of cultural contact and population pressure: "Some of my best friends are cannibals." The book sits with you long after you've read it. Watson does amazing research and it shows.
